We’re building a program in here Avon Lake! We’re looking for female athletes to join Shoregals wrestling at all age levels with a goal of having a full all-girls team at Avon Lake High School!
YOU ARE WELCOME HERE! Share with any interested girls…remember, no one THINKS they’re a wrestler, until they are.
In the 2021-2022 wrestling season, five girls became the first females to ever join the wrestling team in Avon Lake. None of them had ever wrestled before. There were many firsts: the first matches, first wins, first placers, first champs, and… First State Qualifiers!
In the 2022-2023 season, girls wrestling was sanctioned as a sport by the OHSAA for the first time ever. Our team increased to eight girls, all underclassmen. All eight won matches. All eight had pins. The Shoregals won their first ever tournament team placement trophy. They had two State Qualifiers, and their first ever State Finalist!
In the 2023-2024 season, Avon Lake hosted the first-ever girls pre-regional (sectional) tournament, took first place, and sent 6 girls on to regionals (districts). The Shoregals finished as regional runner-up with 3 state qualifiers, and the following week Rejan Alhashash became the first ever Shoregals wrestling STATE CHAMPION!
Nationwide the number of high school girls wrestling quintupled over the last decade, growing to more than 50,000 girls representing 6,500 schools in 2023. Last year alone, it shot up nearly 60%, the biggest increase for the sport in decades.
